Hearts Stay Warm at OA
by Nora Stedman, OA Semester XXIII
Winter is coming. You can smell it in the wind. More importantly though, you can feel it in the wind. Hats and scarves have been procured from the bottom of trunks, and here at The Outdoor Academy, wood stoves are our new greatest allies on cold autumn mornings. We huddle around them, absorbing the last bits of warmth before venturing out into the morning air. We race quickly back inside after our release from classes, eager to be reunited with their heat. The days warm temporarily in the afternoon, but by evening the air has reclaimed its frostiness.
“As our coats and wool socks come out, we need look only as far as the closest stove to find a gathering of friendly faces.” |
Our nightly snacktime is appropriately called Woodstove; we congregate around our fires as they are rekindled to assure our warmth throughout the night. These fires bring us closer than we ever were in warmer weather. With the turning of the season there is no need to search far and wide for companionship; we are no longer spread out over every inch of campus. We gather together indoors, glad to be shielded from the cold, biting air. As our coats and wool socks come out, we need look only as far as the closest stove to find a gathering of friendly faces.
