Welcome to our New Nesters
by Paige Lester-Niles & Tommasanne Lambert
At our offices in Winston-Salem and in Pisgah Forest, the Nest is changing and we are very excited to introduce you our newest additions.
In May Julie Slobin joined our full time ranks as Assistant Camp Director. Many of you campers know Julie well as a smiling Aussie and friendly face at the lake. Julie has been flying back and forth from Australia since 1998 when she first joined our summer camp staff as a swimming and athletics instructor. Since then, Julie has served as Waterfront Director, Athletics Director, head cabin counselor, Hante instructor, Junior Counselor Coordinator, and Head Counselor – all while teaching scores of campers how to swim and enjoy the water as much as she does. In addition to her experiences at Camp, Julie has also spent approximately 18 months working as a trainee for Eagle’s Nest. During this time she did everything from supporting OA students to traveling across the Southeast to promote camp. In her role as Assistant Camp Director, Julie is focused on promoting camp and providing leadership for the camp program. Look for Julie in a city near you soon!
This fall Matthew Sevilla also joined our team as the first full time Assistant Program Director for Eagle’s Nest Foundation. Matthew has also been a member of the Eagle’s Nest community for many years. In his time with Eagle’s Nest Matthew has led a number of Hantes – from climbing Hantes in the Southwest to trekking Hantes in the Northeast to a cultural Hante in Iceland. He also helped develop and lead the WILD Hante this past summer. In addition to his work for Eagle’s Nest Camp, Matthew has also been a lead instructor for the North Carolina Outward Bound School and has worked as a resident for The Outdoor Academy. Matthew is a kind, highly skilled and mission driven teacher. He will do an excellent job of helping develop programs that will support Eagle’s Nest’s mission to “promote the natural world and the betterment of human character.”
We are also very excited to welcome Jeremy “Soup” Campbell as our new Hante Director. New to Eagle’s Nest, Jeremy is a kayaker and rock climber who graduated from Brevard College with a BA in Wilderness Leadership and Experiential Education. He has worked as a Wilderness Program Co-Instructor for Brevard College developing and leading 21-day expeditions, been the Director of Experiential Education at the Flint Hill School in Virginia, been a lead educator and taught Spanish at the Shackleton School in Massachusetts, coached soccer at Carolina Day School in Asheville, and most recently worked as a carpenter and kayaking head at Camp Illahee in Brevard. Throughout this time he has also led several international trips to Costa Rica, Botswana and Zambia, and “stateside” expeditions to the Wind River Range in Wyoming and to the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Jeremy has great enthusiasm and is already a great addition to the Nest.
The Outdoor Academy welcomed Chris Smith to the promotions team this fall. Chris is bringing his experience as a Semester IX Alumnus to the Admissions Officer position, using his knowledge of the program to spread the OA message to our many member and sending schools. Chris recently finished his undergraduate work at The University of Vermont, with a degree in Environmental Studies. Although he spends much of his time on the road, Chris enjoys living in Pisgah Forest where he can take advantage of the rivers and trails in the area. We are all happy to have such an eager and energized hand to promote The Outdoor Academy.
As we welcome in all of these wonderful new folks, we’d like to say one more word of thanks to John Carrico (Hante Director – now in EMT school at UNC-Asheville), Charles Disney (Assistant Camp Director – now living in LA and recently seen as an extra on “Grey’s Anatomy”), and Nina Elliott (Admissions Officer – working with animals at a vet clinic in GA) for all of their work at Eagle’s Nest!
