Building Bonds Through OA’s Work Crew

by Brady Sutton
Current OA Student

Work crew is when we do some volunteer work in the area to get a few things done for the hard working people of the surrounding community. Today, we were off in Dupont State Forest, working on the trails, to keep them better maintained to stem the erosion happening in the area.

I was in a group of about seven or eight other students, and all of us were having a great time. Working in unison, we relocated dirt from the side of the trail to the center, created runoffs so that water would not erode the area, and even did a little singing now and then. You would think that when forced to do manual labor for 3 hours, especially when our parents paid for us to do manual labor, we would get just a bit grumpy; but you could never tell from the group that I was with. We were happy as clams in the sea, getting closer to our classmates in the mutual bond of manual labor.

As I took a quick break to drink some water, the other group passed by, and we soon were kidding with the other group saying how much better we were at working the trails. They brush their shoulders as they pass by, recognizing our comments as a joke and nothing more. As I sat there, watching the other group off into the distance, I thought about how much fun we were having just shoveling dirt. What a wonderful world.
