Sea Islands - What's It All About?

by Caroline Toy, Assistant Director

At Eagle’s Nest, we treasure the natural world around us, and our campers do too! Whether through creek hikes to Three Falls, gazing at the tall white pines at Indian Village, or hunting for salamanders and lizards, we all grow to know our world better while we’re at camp.

This year, we’re bringing back a classic opportunity for campers to explore and learn about a new environment: the Sea Islands Added Adventure! For many years, Eagle’s Nest offered Sea Islands, which included a week-long trip to Ossabaw Island in Georgia. Now, after a hiatus, Sea Islands is back—and better than ever! In two weeks during Session I, combine two wonderful experiences: camp, and the beach as you’ve never seen it before.

Have you ever spent a day at the beach getting muddy? Did you just say, “Huh?” Maybe you’ve never been on a marsh walk before. While exploring the unique marshes of Cumberland Island (one of my favorite places), Sea Islands campers will hunt for periwinkles, hermit crabs, and all kinds of marine life. Of course, we’ll clean up afterwards—by going swimming at the beach! Cumberland—which is preserved as a National Seashore and has no vehicle bridge—has marshes, quiet beaches, and extensive maritime forests. We’ll rent bikes and take a ride through the forest, where campers can learn about Spanish, English, and African-American history under live oaks. At the same time, they can keep a lookout for wild ponies and armadillos!

This unique trip is a classic Eagle’s Nest experience that’s not to be missed. If you’re in seventh or eighth grade, check out the Added Adventures section of our webpage and sign up today!
