2008 Summer Staff Positions Available

Camp Counselors and Instructors

Camp counseling at Eagle's Nest is a demanding job and we have experienced that our counselors need to be self-motivated, energetic people. You will need to be able to budget work time and free time wisely. Being ready to become a creative teacher is necessary.

Your 10 weeks at Eagle's Nest will be an intense experience with limited access to the outside world and limited personal time; however, it will also be one the best experiences of your life - for personal growth, for friendships made and service given to others. Finding ways to manage your energy is the key to being happy in any summer camp environment.

Eagle's Nest is an extremely popular camp for counselors due to its creative and communal processes and it attracts persons who yearn to be of service and make a positive impact on the world.

  • Cabin Counselors and Activity Instructors - We have twelve cabins (6 male and 6 female) which are staffed by cabin counselors. There are at least 3 counselors in each of the cabins. These staff members are responsible for caring for the children in their particular cabin during cabin times, and sharing in a rotating cabin duty schedule. These staff members also teach activities throughout the day in our various program areas.

The following are specific Programming areas in which we are in need of staff

  • Wilderness Staff - Eagle's Nest is seeking enthusiastic wilderness staff to work in our wilderness programs both in camp and for Hante Adventures. Our in-camp wilderness programs are designed for all ages and are grouped to skill level. Hante Adventures are one - three-week long wilderness and cultural experiences for teens. Campers and Participants learn a variety of intensive camping skills including food preparation, fire building, backpacking skills, and environmentally aware camping techniques including LNT. Other Programs also include: White water canoeing, Rock Climbing and extended wilderness treks.
  • Climbing Staff - Eagle's Nest is seeking enthusiastic climbers for our rock-climbing wilderness program. Staff are responsible for planning and leading rock-climbing expeditions along with the Climbing Director. You will teach campers techniques and skills to maximize their enjoyment of climbing and improve their abilities. Beginning climbers will be introduced to all aspects of climbing and advanced campers can progress to multi-pitch routes and mock leading. The climbing program utilizes our climbing tower as well as many local natural climbing areas including Looking Glass, Cedar Rock, Linville Gorge, and Obed. Qualifications: Experience with traditional rock climbing techniques and teaching. CPR and Basic First Aid required, Wilderness First Aid or higher certification preferred.
  • Climbing Director- Eagle's Nest is seeking an enthusiastic climber to head the rock-climbing wilderness program. The director is responsible for planning rock-climbing expeditions in Western North Carolina for young climbers ranging from beginning to advanced skill levels, as well as teaching campers techniques and skills to maximize their enjoyment of climbing and improve their abilities. Qualifications: Experience with traditional rock climbing techniques and teaching, Wilderness First Aid or higher certification. .
  • Paddling Staff- Eagle's Nest is also seeking paddling staff to run our white-water canoeing program. This staff will work alongside the Paddling Director to plan river trips and teach paddling skills at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Our goal is to teach children the skills and techniques to maximize their abilities as paddlers and create an environment in which they can experience outdoor fun. Qualifications: Experience with traditional whitewater paddling techniques and teaching. CPR and First Aid required. Swift Water Rescue and Wilderness First Aid or higher certification preferred.
  • Horseback Riding and Barn Staff- We are seeking Riding Staff who can teach English, huntseat classes at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. Riding Staff will be caring for and working with 8 to 12 horses during the summer.
  • Ceramics Head- We are seeking someone who can be the head of the Ceramics Program for the upcoming summer. We have several ceramics classes each session that do everything from pinch pots to work on the wheel and even raku firing. The Ceramics Head is responsible for firing all of the student pieces in a timely fashion throughout the session.
  • Lifeguards - We are seeking lifeguards who have current LGT certification. Lifeguards will assist in teaching beginning, intermediate, and advanced swim classes and lifeguard during other general swimming times. In addition, we are seeking a Waterfront Head who will be in charge of overseeing the entire waterfront program.
  • Adventure Staff- Each summer Eagle's Nest runs several Hante Adventures in which teens get the opportunity to leave the Eagle's Nest campus in order to explore and learn more about the world around them. This summer we have many very exciting trips including: Sailing the Puget Sound, West Virginia Rock Climbing Experience, Appalachian Adventure- Foothills Trail, Mexico Cultural Connection: Service and Surfing, Wyoming Wilderness Expedition, Wilderness Instructor Leadership Development, Boats and Boulders, New Zealand: A Kiwi Cultural Adventure, and Generations: The Linville Experience. We need qualified adventure staff to lead each of these incredible expeditions. All adventure staff are required to have Wilderness First Aid at a minimum. Wilderness First Responder is preferred. LGT certification is also favorable.

    Support Staff

  • Medical Personnel- Eagle's Nest is in need of camp medical personnel (practicing RNs, LPNs, ARNPs, PAs, and MDs preferred) for each session for the upcoming summer. Medical personnel may work for 1, 2, or 3 week sessions; availability for multiple sessions is also encouraged.   
  • Several Cook Positions - Experience and familiarity in a kitchen is preferred but not required.
  • Laundry - Eagle's Nest is also in need of someone who will be in charge of the laundry facilities at camp. This job includes maintaining those facilities, as well as doing campers laundry each day.
  • Camp Store Manager- The camp store manager is in charge of selling items at our camp store. They will also keep inventory of the store and run errands needed around camp, including mail pick up and sorting.
  • Trip Logistics Coordinator- This position is in charge of coordinating gear and prepping the food that groups will take with them on out of camp treks.
 
Staff ONLY
