Bruce joined the Eagle’s Nest Foundation board in 2007. Bruce’s connection with Eagle’s Nest is through his daughter who attended the Outdoor Academy in the spring of 2002. The experience changed her life forever and it changed him as well.

Bruce was born in New Jersey, is a graduate of Drew University (B.A., Ph.D.) with a Master’s of Divinity from Yale University. He was an assistant professor of Religion and Ethics at Drew, teaching courses in Religion, Social and Biomedical Ethics. He has been an advisor to the health care industries on questions pertaining to biomedical ethics.

In 1988 Bruce moved with his family to Jacksonville, Florida, to become Vice President for Advancement at the Bolles School. He left Bolles in 1994 to help start a new non-profit called FreshMinistries which focused on housing, economic and community development in the city’s urban core. In 2005 he assumed leadership of FreshMinistries’ HIV/AIDS prevention education program in South Africa, Siyafundisa, as Executive Director.  He now serves as the Executive Director of the North Florida chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Bruce is committed to the stewardship of the earth’s resources and helped his wife, Banta Whitner, write a book called This Congruent Life, A Spiritual Ecology Practice.   He is drawn to the mountains, to the same early morning sunrises that his daughter experienced with “morning watch” at OA. Bruce believes that experiential education, including the experiences stillness and solitude, can teach us about ourselves, our lives and our culture.
