Unrestricted gifts are the most useful way to further the work of The Outdoor Academy and Eagle’s Nest Camp. Unrestricted donations help to meet ongoing priorities and position Eagle’s Nest to provide financial assistance for the ever growing need for scholarships, resources and materials for our many programs, site renovations, faculty development opportunities, transportation, and other needs.

As we envision the future, unrestricted donations will help Eagle’s Nest plan new opportunities to continue our mission: experiential education for young people, promoting the natural world and the betterment of human character. Unrestricted dollars make it possible for campers and students to experience a special sense of belonging that is instilled within each of us through being a part of Eagle’s Nest.

Eagle's Nest Camp Scholarship Fund

Eagle’s Nest Foundation welcomes donations to the Eagle’s Nest Camp Scholarship Fund. Contributions designated as scholarships for Eagle’s Nest Camp help campers with financial aid and create opportunities for an enriching and challenging camp experience. Your contribution will enable young people to be members of a community where their skills will grow, their appreciation for the natural world expand, and lasting friendships develop regardless of their ability to pay. Gifts for scholarship funds may not be earmarked for a specific individual.

In 2010, through the support of alumni, families and others, Eagle’s Nest provided 95 campers with financial aid totaling $70,436.

The Outdoor Academy Scholarship Funds

Eagle’s Nest Foundation welcomes donations to The Outdoor Academy Alumni Scholarship Fund, created in 2005 in honor of the tenth anniversary of The Outdoor Academy. Contributions designated to The Outdoor Academy (OA) Alumni Scholarship fund will provide financial assistance to eligible OA students who would otherwise be unable to have an experience at The Outdoor Academy. These contributions help build a lasting base of student support and guarantee future scholars from all walks of life the ability to expand their horizons through our distinct outdoor-focused, experientially based school. Gifts for scholarship funds may not be earmarked for a specific individual.

The goal for The Outdoor Academy Alumni Scholarship Fund is to be able to disburse financial aid at the 50% level for a deserving and eligible OA student(s). Available funds and the current applicant pool will govern actual disbursement levels, which will be allocated on a basis of need, as established by standard Outdoor Academy financial aid procedures.

Eagle’s Nest Foundation strives to give an amount equal to or greater than 10% of The Outdoor Academy tuition budget toward OA scholarships each year. OA Scholarship funds will be expensed specifically for the tuition and school store account for qualified and eligible student(s) in need of financial aid. The full tuition for one semester (2009-2010) is $18,000 plus $350 for the school store. In 2010, the support of OA families and others allowed Eagle’s Nest to provide 13 students with financial aid totaling $143,540.

Endowed and Expendable Named Funds

Eagle’s Nest Foundation welcomes the establishment of endowed funds, as well as expendable named funds and general scholarship funds. Please remember that gifts for scholarship fundsmay not be earmarked for a specific individual.

Named Endowed Funds

Endowed funds will provide income for a specified purpose in perpetuity. The minimum amount to establish a new endowed fund is $25,000. This amount may be reached over a set period of years, and the donor may add to the fund at any time thereafter. Based on market performance, our goal is to utilize eight percent of the fund’s value with four percent being allocated to the designated intention of the fund, three percent reinvested to offset the rate of inflation and one percent to offset administrative fees.

  • Helen and Gordon Hanes Fund
This endowed fund provides partial scholarships to Outdoor Academy students with demonstrated need.

Derek-Luther-Scholarship

  • The Derek A. Luther Camp Scholarship Fund
Derek Luther was a young man full of love, creativity, pride, emotion, and genuinely good character.  He was becoming a man in every sense.  His love of art, including mixed media, theater/drama, music, performing, and writing, brought out the best in him.  His infectious smile, hearty laugh, beautiful hazel eyes, and his 6’3″ lanky frame made him not go unnoticed. Eagle’s Nest was an environment Derek thrived in, adored, appreciated, felt safe in, and looked forward to each year.  Each summer, he would return home with a new found sense of purpose, walk a bit taller, and recount the events from his camp experiences with an air of excitement and pride.  As Derek taught so many, it’s not the trophies, certificates, and accolades you gather along the way that make a person, but the character and bravery they show, day to day, in their efforts. The purpose of this fund is to provide economic relief to young persons who wish to attend Eagle’s Nest Camp.  Preference will be given to campers who are eager to carry on the Eagle’s Nest tradition of developing superior character and reminding others of their personal value, and who have an interest in the arts, theatre, or other creative pursuits.

Fran Price Endowed Scholarship Fund

Fran Price was a talented, wise and very witty woman who provided full scholarships to Eagle’s Nest campers for 15 years. During this time she was solely responsible for giving nearly 20 campers the opportunity to experience the wonders of Eagle’s Nest Camp on a full camp scholarship. Fran intentionally provided these scholarships as a way of propelling others to create greater good in the world. Fran’s generosity “put fresh air in [camper’s] my lungs, a paddle in [their] hands, and a songs in [their] hearts.”  Our goal is to honor Fran and to carry on her desire to make the world a better place.

Caitlin M. Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund

The goal for the Caitlin M. Smith Endowed Scholarship Fund is to be able to disburse financial aid for a deserving and eligible OA student(s).  Contributions designated as scholarships to The Outdoor Academy help to increase our ability to reach a broader applicant base, enhance the diversity of students who attend and guarantee future scholars from all walks of life the ability to expand their horizons through our Semester School.

Helen Valentine Waite Scholarship Fund

Helen Valentine Waite has been associated with Eagle’s Nest since 1958 as a counselor, director and trustee.  As the camp director, she founded the Hante Wilderness School and the Birchtree Outreach for School Programs.  As the Executive Director, she founded The Outdoor Academy of the Southern Appalachians, a semester school for 10th graders.  Under her leadership, and with the Board of Trustees, the Eagle’s Nest Foundation was created, merging all of these experiential programs under one umbrella in 1991.

Helen’s dream for Eagle’s Nest Foundation is to provide experiential education for young people, providing personal connection to the natural world, to art, and to the spirit of “meaningful self” within a healthy, functional community. Her dream for The Outdoor Academy is to provide academic rigor, accredited and appropriate for college preparation, integrating the natural world and active experience into a semester school curriculum for high school education.

In recognition of this creative service and of her dedication to children and to the natural world, her family, Noni Waite-Kucera, Alex Waite, Meggan Waite Hartman, and Moseley Waite, established the Helen Valentine Waite Endowed Scholarship Fund.

The purpose of this fund is to provide one or more scholarships per year to participants in any of the foundation’s programs. The recipient must have financial need and must demonstrate a desire to find his or her own purpose and meaning.   Candidates must be committed to working and learning in the great out-of-doors, with a record of service and action which shows compassion for fellow humans in community, both locally and globally.
