Hante Blog and Photos
by Nate Sutton, Hante Coordinator
It feels more like April than January in Pisgah Forest, and it is hard to believe that we have months to go before our Outdoor Academy (and eventually Hante) students depart on the Appalachian Trail. Historically at OA we have divided up trek into two five-day chunks, one in the Pisgah Ranger District and the other in the Slick Rock Wilderness Area of the Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest. This model had its benefits, but we all felt that we would be doing a service to our students by getting them out for a longer, more continuous period of time. In reality, five days in the wilderness is only three days when you think about travel. For the last two semester’s our students have had the opportunity to engage with the community on the Appalachian Trail for a continuous 9 days. With so much time, we are now able to build up more momentum on the trail, and it is not unusual for our groups to be logging 10-12 mile days by the last part of their expedition...click the title above to read the complete post.

This may seem silly to most, but for me there’s nothing like going home after a day at work, checking my mailbox, and finding the most recent Patagonia catalogue waiting for me. Sure, Patagonia clothes are great, but that’s not why I like their catalogues. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of looking at one, you know they are chock full of exciting photographs and stories of adventures around the world. Be it skiing two feet of fresh powder in Utah, mountaineering in Chile, or scaling rocks in Nepal, the pictures and articles captivate me, turning my ordinary living room into a world-class expedition. It was one such catalogue that introduced me to...click the title above to read the complete post.

In the summer of 2005 I realized that it would be the last summer that my son Walter would be eligible to be a participant in any of the Eagle’s Nest programs. He was a junior in high school, had gone on multiple Hantes including Australia, AT Trek, Mexico and Costa Rica, attended The Outdoor Academy and had spent several sessions as a JC. He had learned a tremendous amount about what it means to be a leader in camp and in the wilderness but he still wasn’t quite ready to take on a full counselor position...click the title above to read the complete blog post.

This past weekend, I went to Georgia with The Outdoor Academy for a weekend of bouldering and caving. On top of a mountain and underground, it was wonderful to spend time with an amazing group of students as they honed their leadership skills and challenged themselves in new ways...click the title above to read more.

Nearly one year ago, I packed up my comfortable home at Eagle's Nest to set out on an open-ended adventure around the globe with my husband, Brian. Leaving Eagle's Nest was hard. My friends were there, my home was there, and I was one of the lucky few who got to witness the changing of the seasons on the Eagle's Nest campus. Life was pretty great, yet dreams of adventuring in far off lands were pulling me away from my cozy little nest. I knew I had to go explore. ..click the title above to read the complete blog post.

I am incredibly excited to announce that Diane will be returning to lead Hante WILD in 2012! This year our paddling focus fits squarely within her professional skill set, and Diane will be responsible for executing our eight-day tour of the Southeast's most classic whitewater. Additionally, she will also be responsible for teaching our 3-day Wilderness First Aid course, sponsored by Wilderness Medicine Institute. I have been so thankful for Diane's historical perspective and all the work that she has put forward to improve the Hante program in the past year, and I cannot wait to...click the title above to read the complete post.

A few weeks ago, I finally acknowledged the illuminated "check engine" light on my dash and parked my car at a neighborhood auto shop. I knew that the news wouldn't be favorable, as my vehicle had been growling at me for some time. My assumptions were confirmed by a phone call from the mechanic. New battery? Check. New brakes? Yep. New transmission? You bet. It seemed that the old Jeep would be out of commission for a few days...click the title above to read more.

The bright fall leaves are beginning to fade and a nippy breeze is picking up, but it’s not too late to enjoy being outside for the last few days of fall. Enjoy some time in nature with your pumpkin pie! Check out these November highlights...click the title above to read more.

Hante Spain is still 7 months away, but I have been fastidiously planning our upcoming journey on to the Iberian Peninsula. Paige and I have put a lot of time and effort into finding a strong set of leaders for this international trip, and I am excited to announce that...click the title above to find out who will be leading Hante Spain!
Tomorrow we leave for theAppalachian Trail. Over the next eight days the students will walk sixty miles up mountains and down valleys, all the while carrying on their backs everything they need to live the good life in the woods: filters and iodine for drinking water; food, fuel, and stoves for hearty dinners; journals, wool hats, cameras, and maybe a bit of chocolate for the top of Roan Mountain. (If you happen to talk to them this evening, please don’t mention the chocolate – I’d like to keep it a surprise.) Finally they’ll lace up their boots, now well worn-in after Orientation Trek, two Paddle/Climb weekends, and Classes in the Field...click the title above to read more about The Outdoor Academy's fall 8-day trek.
