Lighting Up the Dark

by Caroline Toy, Assistant Director

This past weekend, I went to Georgia with The Outdoor Academy for a weekend of bouldering and caving. On top of a mountain and underground, it was wonderful to spend time with an amazing group of students as they honed their leadership skills and challenged themselves in new ways.

A huge part of all the programs of Eagle’s Nest—Camp, OA, and Hante—is giving our students and campers the opportunity to be in new situations and learn how they can deal with tough or even scary things. And going underground, into the dark, the mud, and sometimes tight spaces, is scary. Everyone handles that challenge differently, and lots of choices—whether to crawl into a tiny space or to take another route around and cheer on friends as they crawl out—are successes to be proud of.

While Hantes don’t go underground, they pose new and sometimes uncomfortable challenges in similar ways. These are different for different people: for one person, it may be the thought of hiking for ten miles with a pack; for another, it maybe the idea of going without a shower for two weeks! And yet as much as Hante participants return to campus excited about their new friends and the beautiful places they’ve seen, they’re most proud of the things they accomplished that they didn’t think they could.

Going away from home or away from camp for three weeks can seem really intimidating—and that’s OK. It’s more than OK: it’s a challenge you can give yourself. So here’s our question for you:

What would you do if you knew you could not fail?
