HANTE SPAIN TENTATIVE ITINERARY
June 24th - July 13th, 2012
June 24th: Meet leaders in Charlotte. Our Hante students will meet at the Charlotte Airport in the late morning to greet their leaders, and later in the afternoon our group will depart together on their flight to Madrid.
June 25th - 26th: Explore historic Madrid. We will adjust to the new time zone across the Atlantic by slowly meandering through the streets of Madrid, taking fancy in beginning to discover the culture.
June 27th – July 6th: Travel by foot on El Camino de Santiago de Compostela. For centuries Christian pilgrims have retraced the footsteps of St. James to Santiago de Compostela. While there are innumerous pilgrimage routes that have been utilized for centuries across Spain, they all converge into the Way of St. James. Our Hante will journey 80 miles in the same fashion from Burgos to Leon over the course of a week. The slower pace of foot travel will immerse our students in the gentle rural landscape of Northern Spain and forge real connections with travelers from all nations.
July 7th-8th: Explore León and Las Medulas. Las Medulas is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and it was once an important gold mine in for Roman Empire. Centuries ago the Romans employed a unique type of hydraulic mining to undermine entire mountains with large quantities of water, and this method has left lasting and beautiful impressions on the landscape.
July 9th – 11th: Celebration in Santiago de Compostela. Hante Spain will begin to wind down our whirlwind tour by visiting its second World Heritage site in a week. Our students will celebrate their journey on El Camino by visiting the St. James Cathedral and the historic town of Santiago de Compostela.
July 12th: Return to Madrid. Hante Spain will return from travels to their starting point in Madrid. They will close out their journey with a closing celebration and formal goodbyes before resting up for their travel home.
July 13th: Fly from Madrid to Charlotte.
