OASES 2010 Workshops
Summary of 2010 Workshops

Busy Bee Farm: Bees, Garden Beds and Chickens
Experience and observe a sustainable farm and garden in action. Bees play an integral roll in productive gardens. Come learn about the importance of these insects while working on a beehive maintenance project at “Busy Bee Farm.” Along with bee keeping, you will also take part in constructing and planting raised garden beds for spring crops and get to learn about the chicken processing that takes place on site at the farm.

Grocery Store Dilemma
In the Grocery Store Dilemma, we will visit both a Brevard Farmers’ Market in addition to a chain grocery store and compare the differences in availability, taste, freshness, and price of the two shopping locales. We will taste-test organic versus conventional foods, as well as produce grown locally in contrast to produce which has been shipped from around the world. This workshop will be a real life look at the effects of the decisions we make when we shop for groceries, as well as the availability of healthy, local products in our home towns.

Home Grown Tomatoes
There’s nothing better than the fresh, juicy taste of a homegrown tomato. Come get your hands dirty and learn how to turn your yard into a bountiful garden. We’ll cover all you need to know to get started growing your own food right outside your kitchen door. It doesn’t get more local than that!

Chillin’ with Bill Hill
Holly Hill Farm is a third generation farm that provides local organic produce to the surrounding area. Find out from the owner what that really entails. What's organic mean? What does a farmer have to do in order to call his produce organic? What are the advantages and challenges of staying local? Not only will we learn these answers, we'll also get a chance to get our hands dirty, planting seeds and pulling weeds.

The Good Life: Cooking from Scratch
Wash your hands, turn on the oven, and get ready to have your hands in fresh made bread dough! This workshop will take participants through the process of making homemade bread, as well as working with fresh ingredients to have more whole foods in your diet. Why is this important? As more of our food is processed and requires less “work,” we lose touch with the creative process that is making our own food with the best ingredients and lots of love: the key to the good life!

Where’s the Beef?
Our neighbor, George Lenze at Everett Farm raises all-natural beef. In this workshop we will visit his 80-acre farm and look into all the aspects and challenges of his operation, from growing and harvesting hay, to rotating pastures, to breeding cattle, to marketing. In the afternoon we will pitch in with our shovels and manure forks in the cattle barn.

"Our Farm at Richland Creek:" A day of Community Supported Agriculture
Spend the day at a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) farm! Learn about how this CSA originated and what it takes to support a small scale farmer in this era of industrial agriculture while getting your hands in the soil and planting beds for the summer garden. "Our Farm at Richland Creek" is a diversified, organic farm in its second season of operation set high in the mountains next to a beautiful creek. Come spend the day experiencing growing food sustainably for a living.
