South Carolina has an estimated 30,000 miles of rivers and no natural lakes, with scenic blue byways winding from the edge of the Appalachian Mountains down to the Atlantic Ocean, and carrying mountain spring water to the sea.

Hante Scout in 2026 is oriented toward testing 2027’s Hante Rivers & Reeds. Participants will traverse from the South Carolina Piedmont to the Atlantic Ocean, weaving through the landscape on the Edisto River. Along the way, they will learn from local artisans and scientific researchers about their crafts and the waterfront community, exploring rarely seen pockets of wildlands involving bald eagles, dolphins, alligators and crested herons. Participants on a “Scout” Hante are helping to test itineraries and identify useful resources to make Eagle’s Nest trips even better, while also weaving together stories and grasses as they travel as a group.

Hante Scout is for:

  • Alumni of any Eagle’s Nest program looking for a new adventure, or a special opportunity to return.
  • Individuals who desire trips that have multiple meanings: recreation, exploration, research, trial and error, and creating opportunities for others.
  • Individuals interested in a balance between outdoor adventure and cultural or scientific exploration
  • Those who feel a sense of fulfillment in interdependence with others, and sharing care and responsibility for the group

Tentative Itinerary

  • Saturday 8/29: The group will depart for Colleton State Park to spend the first night together camping near the put-in on the Edisto. This day will be lots of introductions, paddling and crafting basics, learning of systems and group norms, and establishing a routine.
  • Sunday 8/30 through Thursday 9/3: The group paddles nearly 100 miles down the Edisto towards the coast! During the journey, participants will camp along the river’s edge, learn techniques in using natural fibers to create woven structures and useful objects, and practice plant and animal identification to develop a deeper understanding of the biodiverse ecosystems they are traveling across.
  • Friday 9/4: Finish the paddle and arrive at scenic Edisto Beach State Park! After a multi-day exertion out on the water, this day will be flexible to group and personal needs as you settle into a final night together. Expect time at the beach, comfort food and drink, and relaxing sounds around the salt marshes to ease into restful sleep.
  • Saturday 9/5: A gathering for last minute cleaning and organizing of gear before heading back to campus. There will be a final debrief to reflect on what has been learned and what can be taken going forward, such as leadership, teamwork, communication, and resilience.
