Picture classrooms without walls, a math teacher who paddles whitewater, art class at the blacksmithing forge, and a student body filled with the 27 best friends you could imagine. This is The Outdoor Academy, a semester high school in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains between Brevard and Asheville, North Carolina.

Since 1995, students from public, private, and home schools across the country have come to our 182-acre campus in the Blue Ridge Mountains to spend a challenging academic semester away. Our honors-level classes and place-based curriculum is integrated with wilderness experiences (backpacking, whitewater paddling, and rock climbing), environmental studies, and creative arts (including traditional crafts such as blacksmithing, wood carving, and quilting).

“There aren’t enough ways or words available to recommend OA to every student and parent. It is a time and an experience that you will never forget or regret, and you will be touched, changed, and grateful for the rest of your life. I promise!”

-Bruce, OA Parent
