One of my favorite memories from this summer is of standing by the campfire on Nature Hill, thoughtfully observing the scene that was unfolding around me: counselors with their guitars enthusiastically playing campfire songs while campers with various sized sticks discussed how to make the perfect S’more. Beyond the fire circle other children chased fireflies or fences with their sticks as they awaited their turn to roast marshmallows. Another group laughed as they log-rolled down the hill and ran back up to do it again. Joy abounded.

Moments like these illuminate one of the many values of Eagle’s Nest Camp – the opportunity to be carefree.  Camp is more than just a break from school—it’s a giant plunge into the magical world of childhood.

This kind of unstructured play—so central to our camp experience—allows children to create their own adventures and discover new wonders every day. There are no screens or schedules to distract them, just the freedom to be fully present in the moment, whether they’re laughing around a campfire, dipping their toes in a creek, or simply lying in the grass and gazing at the stars.

“The thing that I love most about ENC is the freedom for kids to be themselves in a loving environment. I love that they can just be silly kids and have fun and have a break from their fast paced life in the real world. I also love that they can learn to be more independent and to also be an active member of a community.”  – camp parent 2024

Why Carefree Play Matters

Moments of spontaneity and joy are essential for a child’s development. Away from the daily pressures of school, social media, and structured activities, kids can immerse themselves in the beauty of nature and experience a sense of freedom that is becoming increasingly rare.

Whether they’re chasing fireflies or creating imaginary worlds in the woods, children have the chance to explore and play without restrictions. These moments help build creativity, foster independence, and develop resilience. Studies show that outdoor play reduces anxiety, builds emotional intelligence, and helps children feel more connected to themselves and others.

The Benefits of Outdoor Play

Time outdoors has lasting effects on a child’s well-being. Rolling down a hill or laughing with friends under the stars may seem like simple pleasures, but they lay the foundation for confidence, social skills, and emotional balance. When children run through fields, explore the woods, or stomp through the creek, they’re doing more than just playing—they’re growing.

At Eagle’s Nest, these experiences are not just encouraged, they’re essential. We provide the space and the opportunity for children to immerse themselves in nature, exploring at their own pace and discovering their own sense of wonder.

Let Them Experience the Magic

This summer, let your child experience a refreshing rain storm, swim in a mountain lake, and laugh with friends. Give them the gift of carefree exploration, where the beauty of nature and the joy of childhood come together. At camp, the magic of summer is not just in the fireflies—it’s in the children, creating their own light.

Camp Sessions are beginning to fill. Register by September 30th to receive a tuition discount. If you’d like to learn more, please schedule a time to have a Zoom meeting with me by visiting my calendar or joining us for a prospective camper virtual presentation on September 23rd or a returning camper meet up on September 26th.

We can’t wait to experience the carefree magic of Eagle’s Nest with you this summer!
